Baaldin – Chacha Nehru’s birthday. Trip to Science Park
Building on the success so far and the happiness generated in the children, lead to the organization of yet another picnic on the Baldin. This time it was a day long event. The venue was District Science Center in Dharmapur, a nearby site. The trip was made in a hired bus. The children were exposed to various scientific principles and toys at this Science Park. The children got time out to play with toys and observe physics in action. What is amazing to note is the manner in which these children gel with one another, the way they adapt. They also participated in the Painting competition on the occasion of ‘Baldin’ – Chacha Nehru’s birthday. Their inherent senses were put to test at this picnic. The host “Kadi School” provided the children with sumptuous meals.
Diwali 2009 Celebrations
Seeing the intensity of satisfaction in the children increasing by the day, and the progress in their reading and writing abilities, Diwali celebrations were added. The children painted cards, and did rangoli, made diyas and Kandils (lanterns). The children carried part of the diyas and Kandils home and for the first time ever lit up their homes with these festive objects. Some of these were sold and the beneficiaries were the children.
One Year School Anniversary
The school completed one year on December 14, 2009. – A songs, dance and drama function was held on this occasion and a few interesed guests were invited for this.
The beginning
The school had a simple beginning – no elaborate or a grandiose planning – started 18 months back as a small personal initiative: Mayuri’s domestic help had five children. And, none were going to school. On investigation Mayuri found that the ‘Basti’ from which her domestic help came had same story in every family. No children in this Basti were going to school.
Mayuri started to call these children – initially there were five children – to her home every evening after she returned from the factory at 6.0 PM, and will teach them to read and write. To get them interested was a challenge. To ensure their continued motivation, and regular attendance, along with the studies, she will get them to paint, play some small games, tell them stories and treat them to interesting snacks. The underlying idea in the beginning was to teach three R (reading, ‘riting and ‘rthimetic) to these children. Two of these children soon progressed enough to get admitted to the Thakkar Baba Ashram Shala – a residential school at Talasari, District Dhanu.
And this was the beginning of a ‘ Journey’.
